Overview:
Tumpak Sewu Waterfall — often called “The Niagara of Indonesia” — is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in Java. Located on the border of Lumajang and Malang, this multi-tier curtain waterfall drops into a deep circular basin with lush jungle surrounding it.
It’s a favorite among adventure travelers because of its unique shape, challenging descent, and breathtaking viewpoints.
Best Viewpoints:

1. Main Panoramic Viewpoint (Top View)
The classic viewpoint offering a full panoramic look at the curtain-shaped waterfall.
2. Bottom of the Waterfall (Tebing Valley)
A challenging trek down bamboo stairs and narrow paths, but worth it for the dramatic close-up view.
3. Goa Tetes
A colorful cave area with terraced mineral formations and dripping springs—often included in the same trek.
How to Get There:
From Malang: 2–2.5 hours by private car or motorbike
From Lumajang: 1–1.5 hours
Nearest Airport: Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (MLG)
The safest and most convenient way is using a private driver or local guide because road signage is minimal and the descent can be slippery.
Best Time to Visit:
Dry Season (April – October) = Best visibility, safer trekking
Morning Visits (before 9 AM) = Softer light, less crowd, cooler temperature
Avoid heavy rain periods because the descent to the bottom becomes too risky.
What to Expect:
Challenging descent: Bamboo ladders, ropes, slippery rocks
Jungle atmosphere: Moist, green canyon walls
Powerful waterfall spray: Expect shoes and clothes to get wet
Moderate fitness required: Not recommended for those with knee problems
This is a true adventure destination, not a casual walk.
Travel Tips:
Wear trekking sandals or trail shoes
Bring a waterproof bag for phone/camera
Hire a local guide for safety
Avoid the bottom trek during rain
Bring extra clothes; you will get wet
Expect to spend 3–4 hours exploring both viewpoints
